Electricity rate: About $0.15 per kWh for homes, a Texas average. We use $0.15 here. Homes are modeled at $0.15, businesses at $0.10.
Your usage: Monthly bill divided by the rate, then times 12 for the year. That is about 1,500 kWh a month and 17,600 kWh a year.
Production: About 1,500 kWh per kW of system per year in Texas, roughly 5.2 peak sun hours per day for Austin / Hill Country after a typical derate. Full sun, so we model 1,500 kWh per kW here.
System size: Annual usage divided by annual production per kW, sized to offset most of your use and rounded to the nearest half kW. Final size depends on your roof space and goals.
Installed cost: About $2.50 to $3.00 per watt for homes, turnkey and before any incentives. Shown as a range.
First year savings: The energy you offset in year one times your rate.

How incentives work in 2026

How you own the system changes the credits. A purchased home system in 2026 no longer gets the federal solar tax credit that ended on December 31, 2025, so we do not build that credit into the savings above. A lease or PPA, where a third party owns the system, can still access a 30 percent credit through 2027 if construction begins by July 4, 2026. Texas utility incentives vary by utility and change often.
